Frequently Asked Questions
-
How long does the class take?
-
The timeline depends on your availability. Once you sign up, we'll send your eLearning materials to your email. Some students complete this in just a few days (though it's important not to rush). After finishing the eLearning, give us a call to book your two-hour orientation session. During this session, we'll arrange your two pool sessions (3-4 hours each on Mondays and Wednesdays) and your two days of Open Water dives at the lake (9am-1pm). If your schedule is flexible, the entire course can be completed in about two weeks.
-
What is private open water?
-
Some students have work schedules that don't align with our regular pool sessions (Mon & Wed) or Open Water dives (Sat & Sun). A private Open Water course is tailored to your availability, with an additional fee for a dedicated instructor for all sessions and dives. If your schedule is flexible, the course can be completed in 5-6 days.
-
Can I buy a full SCUBA set before my Open Water dives?
-
Definitely! However, we encourage our students to try the gear we provide – we want our students to try out different BCDs and use our rental regulators to ensure they find the perfect fit.
-
Do I need to have diving boots?
-
Yes, this is a requirement. When doing Open Water dives in our local lakes, the water temperature can get quite cold. Dive boots offer extra thermal protection in these conditions. They are available for purchase in our storefront.
-
What if I can only make it to some of the classes?
-
We offer flexible private lessons. For instance, if a student can't attend the scheduled pool sessions but is available for the Open Water dates, we will only charge for a private instructor for the Open Water portion of the course.
-
What happens if I miss a class?
-
We strive to accommodate everyone, but The Bearded Suba Diver reserves the right to charge a $50 fee for any missed orientation or pool session. For no-shows at Open Water dives, a $100 fee will be charged per person.
-
What does the Open Water SCUBA Certification allow me to do?
-
a certification card allows divers to purchase dive equipment, get cylinder fills, and dive within recreational dive limits internationally. The SDI Open Water class certifies divers to dive to a depth of 60ft.
-
When does my certification expire?
-
Your SDI Open Water certification will never expire. However, if it has been a prolonged period, we recommend taking the SDI Refresher course to re-familiarize yourself on dive skills, theory, equipment, and safety procedures.
